The Royal Welsh "WELSH WARRIORS"
Welcome to the 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh webpage.  My name is Lieutenant Colonel Mark Wheeler and I have the great privilege of commanding the 2nd Battalion.  We are 96% Welsh and recruit from across Wales; many soldiers serve with relatives or close friends in the same Battalion.

We are an extremely busy Battalion; we play and work very hard, so I thought I would give you a flavour for what we have been up to over the past few years.

In 2007 we were deployed on a thrilling tour in Iraq from which we had a significant haul of medals, not least two Military Crosses for separate acts of exceptionally bravery by Sergeant (then Corporal) Richie Pask and Lieutenant Colonel (then Major) Steve Webb.  On our return we had a most fantastic welcome home from the people of Wales as we paraded from Cardiff Castle to the Millennium Stadium.

2008 was about restoring a bit of balance after our tour to Iraq.  As well as catching up on our leave and seeing our friends and families once more we retained the Army Cup for rugby, went adventurous training in varied locations such as Belize, the Alps and the English Channel and focussed on individual development including a patrols competition over the Black Mountains and a month in Canada doing the best possible war fighting training: a great and varied year.

2009 saw two of the Rifle Companies deploying to Afghanistan.  They were in the thick of some of the most challenging soldiering the Army has seen since the Korean War, whilst the remainder of the Battalion visited the Prairie of Northern Canada for a challenging exercise, and of course some more thrilling adventurous training.

Unsurprisingly 2010 has a number of challenges ahead: these include training in Uganda, a 3 month company deployment to the Falkland Isles and a Battalion Headquarters and Rifle company deployment to Afghanistan.  Of course we are still continuing with our career courses and personal development, compete at the top level of Army sport, arrange adventurous training in far off lands and have time to spend with our families.

Whilst operations, training, sport and adventurous training sum up our activity, we have to live somewhere.  We are very lucky as the Battalion is based in Tidworth, Wiltshire which is just south of Swindon (on the M4) and only about 90 minutes from most of the soldiers’ homes in South Wales.  Where possible I run a short week starting at 1000 on Monday and finishing lunchtime on Friday so that we can all get three nights at home every week.

We are in a brand new barracks with modern, en-suite single rooms, and excellent sports facilities.  Our families are in a choice of older, cheaper houses or some brand new ones which are state of the art.  The children have a choice of primary schools and a secondary school which gained academy status in 2009.  So we have a firm and friendly base to work from; our little bit of Wales in Wiltshire.  Take some time to look at the rest of our website to learn more about life in the 2nd Battalion the Royal Welsh.
