Welcome to 1st Battalion - The Royal Welsh Homepage

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the website of the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh (The Royal Welsh Fusiliers).  The Battalion is currently based in Episkopi Barracks, Cyprus on a 2 ½ year tour and is due to return to The Dale Barracks in Chester in late summer 2008.

Cyprus has a wonderful climate and there is so much to do, whether it is using the fantastic beaches and swimming in the Mediterranean, hill walking in summer and snow skiing in winter on Mount Troodos, or visiting the numerous sites containing ancient Roman and Greek ruins.  The island has something for everybody.  Closer to home in Episkopi, all members of the Battalion, and their families, have access to a wide range of facilities and activities, including the Battalion’s very own water sports club, which includes 2 speedboats for waterskiing and towing inflatable rides.  There is also a large gymnasium, numerous sports pitches, large stables for horse-riding, a golf course and a yacht club.  Just down the road in Akrotiri is a cinema and bowling alley.(Learn more about Cyprus)

Although there are great leisure facilities available for all, the Battalion’s main focus at the moment is operations.  The Battalion assumed the role as the Theatre Reserve Battalion (TRB) on 1 April 2007 for short-notice deployments to both Afghanistan and Iraq.  We are due to maintain this role until 1 June 2008.  To date, over 160 members of the Battalion have deployed to Afghanistan on a 5 month deployment and 120 more have deployed to Iraq for a 4 month tour.  The Battalion also has another 120 personnel currently in Afghanistan and is likely to deploy up to 60 more later this year.  The operational tasks have varied from high-intensity operations against the Taliban to presence and influence operations with the local inhabitants.  These have been a real test of professionalism and training, but all who have deployed have been more than up to the challenge and have come through with flying colours.  There have also been acts of true bravery and courage along the way, which have shown stubborn determination to succeed, often against overwhelming odds, thereby maintaining the true style, ethos and spirit of the Royal Welsh.

I intend to use this website as the central depository of information on the 1st Battalion.  This will be no small task, but I am sure that it will develop over time and hopefully become a useful resource for all to view.

Finally, for those of you who may be considering a career in the Army, you could make no better choice than to join The Royal Welsh; the Welsh Infantry.  We are a true family regiment where you will have some great experiences and make mates for life.  I look forward to serving with you in the future.

Up to the Challenge?
